Suitcases, Backpacks, Duffels—Oh My!

Sheryl S.

Updated: Mar 21, 2021

Gone are the days when you can pack anything you like, in dedicated suitcases, and, as a solo traveler, have your Sherpa (aka “husband” or partner) carrying it for you! A hotly debated topic, if you Google “backpack vs suitcase,” you will get approximately 6.6M results! Rather than regurgitate the discussion here with my thoughts, I will link you to a few interesting articles to decide for yourself. Throughout this site, it is not my intent to share what necessarily works for me as though it will work for you. As I tell my kids, there is more than one way to get somewhere and more than one way to do something. It’s what works best for you.

What does seem to be clear between the two is that more often that not, it is the type of travel you are going on. If you’re tooling around as a tourist to a single destination, a suitcase may make more sense. If you are out hiking and climbing, a backpack could be your best friend. And apparently, is cozier to snuggle up to, should the need arise! And don’t forget about saving room for souvenirs you collect along the way.

NOTE: There is a great infographic in here but clearly because Tortuga sells backpacks and duffels, they lean more towards that. Suitcases are a perfectly suitable means of travel…with wheels and side handle included! https://blog.tortugabackpacks.com/travel-backpack-vs-suitcase/
